What We Believe
We have 3 types of beliefs here at Southland: essential beliefs, important beliefs and non-essential beliefs.
1. Essential beliefs – There are 14 doctrinal statements and a handful of practices you must believe and adhere to in order to become a member of Southland Community Church, and they are all found in our Statement of Beliefs & Practices (see below).
The first 7 are very basic and foundational statements about the nature of God, sin, people and the Bible, and which are in alignment with the fundamental creeds of Orthodox Christian thought from the past 2000 years. The last 7 statements are very basic and foundational statements about the nature of the Church (both local and Universal) and the institution of Marriage. Click here to view our essential beliefs.
2. Important beliefs – There is another set of beliefs which, though important to us, we do not use as criteria to exclude people from membership – so long as they agree to live in harmony with us.
These are beliefs which we have strong convictions about, which we preach from the pulpit boldly and unapologetically, which shape our plans and activities, and that make up a core part of our identity as a church. But they are also beliefs about which we know that Christians may legitimately disagree. Click here to view our important beliefs.
3. Non-essential beliefs – “Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgment on disputable matters... Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls... So then each of us will give an account of himself to God... So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God.” – Romans14:1,4,12,22
These are beliefs in which our members at Southland have liberty to believe as they choose within the confines of love and conscience. Some examples would include dancing, style of music and what translation of the Bible you use.
