School of Ministers
What is the School of Ministers?
The School of Ministers is our church’s intensive discipleship school for young adults (18 – 25ish mostly, though ‘older’ people are considered on a case-by-case basis) who have graduated from High School. It runs from September through April each year and there are both one-year and two-year tracks available (students must qualify for year two).
When are classes?
Students meet for classes here at the church two days every week, Wednesday and Friday, from September through April. Wednesdays and Fridays are full days for SOM students, who must be at church for prayer by 6:30am and are not dismissed until 5:00 pm.
What does a typical school day look like?
School days are filled with a mixture of classroom learning, prayer, worship and hands-on ministry experience.
Who is in charge of the School of Ministers?
The School of Ministers is directed and led by one of Southland’s Associate Pastors, Chris Puhach, you can email him at

What does it cost to be a student in the School of Ministers?
Tuition for year one of the School of Ministers is $1500, which is all-inclusive since all of the student’s books and materials are purchased for them out of that tuition money. Year two costs $500.
What is expected of students in the School of Ministers?
The School of Ministers is MUCH MORE than just a school and students do considerably much more than attend classes while in the School of Ministers. This is about discipleship not just teaching! Our goal is not to turn out students, but to turn out fruit-producing disciples who will go on to university, full-time ministry, or directly into the marketplace, and immediately begin making a radical difference for Jesus Christ wherever they are. For this reason:
1. Students are encouraged to work while they are in school. We do not have full-time students in School of Ministers because discipleship happens best in the context of real life: paying bills, going to work, etc., etc.
2. Students are expected to minister and serve here at Southland while they are in school. There is a lot more expected of our students than just showing up for class on Wednesdays and Fridays. Our students are all expected to engage in the life of the Body here at Southland, throughout the week. Service is one of the primary components of discipleship!
3. Students are mentored in actually DOING ministry, not just taught doctrine. In the School of Ministers our passion is to actually give our students many opportunities to DO ministry. This is how ministers are trained up – not by simply teaching doctrine, but by mentoring people as they actually step out and DO ministry.
4. Students will be given many opportunities to receive personal prayer ministry for THEMSELVES. One of our fundamental beliefs at Southland is that people who have been set free and who have experienced Jesus for themselves are the only people capable of ministering and bring Jesus to others. For this reason the students in the School of Ministers are given many opportunities not just to do ministry, but to receive it.
What is the goal of the School of Ministers?
The School of Ministers is designed to equip young disciples to not only minister within in the walls of the church, but also in the marketplace, their neighborhoods, their families – really, wherever God may send them. The goal is to provide a strong foundation of “core stuff”, which will be drawn upon no matter what happens with each person after they complete their year in SOM. Regularly, students will be challenged with the truth that the “foundations” do not exist in our lives simply because we know them, but because we also act on them.
