Immigration Ministry

Deuteronomy 10:19 (NLT) exhorts us:  “So you, too, must show love to foreigners, for you yourselves were once foreigners in the land of Egypt.”

As believers, we all share the ancestry of this passage, and therein, the command attached to it to love “foreigners.”  We can apply this here today to mean immigrants to Canada.  Here at Southland we believe that it is vitally important to reach out and love the immigrant people among and around us.  It is incredibly hard to start a new life in a new land – for most people this involves integrating into a new culture, climate, foods, language, job, and social circle.  We who have grown up in Canada cannot fathom how difficult this is for individuals and families.  As the church, the hands and feet of Christ, we have much to offer.

The Immigration Ministry exists at Southland to welcome newcomers to South Eastern Manitoba, and to extend Christ’s love to each one.  There are several ways we do this:

Service Translation:  We translate our services into the following languages:
Korean: Sunday 11:00am
Low German: Sunday 11:00am
High German: Sunday 9:00am
Spanish: Sunday 9:00am
Russian: Saturday 6:00pm

Cell Groups:  We have cells meeting weekly that speak High German, Low German, Korean, or Spanish.

Events: From time to time, we host events for immigrant people in the area whether they attend Southland or not.  We hosted an Easter Dinner this April and had friends from 20 different countries in attendance!

Partnering with Eastman Immigrant Services (EIS):  Through volunteering at community events, as well as partnering one-to-one or couple-to-couple with newcomers to Canada, we serve EIS in welcoming and befriending immigrants.

If you are an immigrant looking for connection or a place to worship, or if you are a volunteer interested in helping in this ministry area, please contact Ray Yoder at 326-9020 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .
